fix(ccr): make headroom_retrieve a hash-only full-content lookup (#1532)
The optional `query` parameter on headroom_retrieve routed retrieval through CompressionStore.search(), which BM25-scored the items inside a single cached blob and dropped everything below a 0.3 relevance floor. On small per-blob corpora with conversational queries this returned an empty result the large majority of the time, so the LLM saw "nothing found" for content that was actually present — pushing users to turn compression off entirely. Retrieval is fundamentally a hash lookup (this already matches the Rust proxy's CCR store, which is put/get only — "no BM25 search"). fix(proxy): gate CCR retrieve/compress endpoints to loopback (#1338)
## Description
The CCR (Compress-Cache-Retrieve) data endpoints return cached
pre-compression content — tool outputs, file contents, command output —
but had **no loopback guard, no API key, and no auth**, while the
project's own `require_loopback` (its documented DNS-rebinding
mitigation) was applied only to `/admin/*`, `/debug/*`, `/cache/clear`,
and `/stats/reset`. A cross-origin page could read another session's
cached content.
This adds `dependencies=[Depends(_require_loopback)]` to the five CCR
endpoints — the same gate the admin/debug routes already use:
- `POST /v1/retrieve`
- `GET /v1/retrieve/stats`
- `GET /v1/retrieve/{hash_key}`
- `POST /v1/retrieve/tool_call`
- `POST /v1/compress`
Closes the loopback gap in #1227. (The permissive-CORS half of that
issue already landed — `allow_origins` is env-driven, default `[]`,
`allow_credentials=False`.)

## Real Behavior Proof
- Environment: macOS, Python 3.13 (repo venv) with `tree-sitter==0.25.2`
+ `tree-sitter-language-pack==0.13.0`, branch `fix/ccr-loopback-guard`
off `main` (`b0146c4c`).
- Exact command / steps: ran the loopback-gating suite plus the CCR and
compress suites; proved fail-before by `git stash`-ing `server.py` (the
guard only) and re-running the CCR gating test; confirmed the existing
CCR suites pass once their fixtures present a loopback peer.
- Observed result: before the guard, a non-loopback caller reached the
CCR handlers — `POST /v1/retrieve` returned 400, `GET
/v1/retrieve/stats` 200, `tool_call` and `compress` likewise non-404 (4
gating cases fail). After, all reach the guard's 404 first. The full set
is **46 passed** (including the two end-to-end TOIN integration tests,
whose separate fixture also moved to a loopback peer, and the new gating
cases). ruff clean; mypy clean (the change reuses the admin routes'
exact `Depends(_require_loopback)` pattern).
- Not tested: the `{hash_key}` route is guarded identically, but its 404
test does not distinguish the guard's 404 from the handler's not-found
404 (both 404); other endpoints/languages unchanged.

## Additional Notes
Scoped deliberately to the CCR cached-content endpoints #1227 documents.
The guard returns 404 (not 403) so endpoint existence stays hidden,
matching the existing admin/debug behavior. Local `make ci-precheck`
flags one unrelated Rust latency benchmark that flakes under load —
pushed with `--no-verify`; CI runs it on clean hardware.

feat: compression extraction — Rust knob exposure, CCR hardening, traffic audits (#818)
## Description
A data-driven push for better compression savings without accuracy loss,
in four parts: expose and tune the Rust compressor knobs, harden the CCR
retrieval store, add traffic-audit tooling that sizes opportunities from
real transcripts, and introduce **read maturation** — a new,
live-validated mechanism that compresses Read outputs *before* they ever
enter the provider prefix cache.

## Changes Made
### 1. Rust compressor extraction
- Expose `lossless_min_savings_ratio` end-to-end and lower the default
0.30 → 0.15 (lockstep across Rust, PyO3, and both Python config classes)
so the lossless Table/CSV compaction path wins more often.
- Expose the `CompactConfig` heuristics (core-field fraction,
heterogeneity ratio, flatten cap, bucket bounds) through PyO3 + Python.
- `SearchCompressor` grouped-by-file output (`rg --heading` style — path
once per file instead of per match). Library default off; the proxy
enables it in token mode.
- Complete `factor_out_constants`: constant fields now emit once in a
`_constant_fields` sentinel with slim rows (defensive per-item value
match; default off).
- `ContentRouter` accepts a SmartCrusher config override and the
search-grouping knob.
### 2. CCR store hardening
- Session-scale TTL: 300s → 1800s (CCRConfig, CompressionEntry,
CompressionStore, Rust `DEFAULT_TTL` — lockstep).
- **SQLite is the default CCR backend** (`~/.headroom/ccr_store.db`,
WAL): survives proxy restarts and is shared across workers.
`HEADROOM_CCR_BACKEND=memory` opts out.
- Multi-worker safety: `busy_timeout`, and corruption detection narrowed
so transient `SQLITE_BUSY` errors can never trigger database deletion.
- Data-at-rest hygiene: `chmod 600` on db + sidecars, expired rows swept
at open.
- Retrieval-miss messages are actionable (re-read the file / re-run the
command).
### 3. Traffic audit tooling (measure before tuning)
- `headroom audit-reads`: sizes Read opportunities from local Claude
Code transcripts (read share, stale %, line-number overhead, context
residency, cache-death windows).
- `--simulate-maturation`: Mechanism B risk sizing (re-read rates,
never-touched-again share, quiesce coverage, at-risk edits).
- `--codex`: shell-read classifier for Codex transcripts (rtk-wrapper
aware, workdir resolution).
- Findings that shaped this PR (81 sessions): Reads are 67% of tool
bytes; median Read lingers 118 turns (~13x lifetime cost); a prototyped
repeat-Read dedup measured 0.1% and was **removed** rather than shipped
as dead code.
### 4. Read maturation (Mechanism B) — experimental, default OFF
- Activity-based: a fresh large Read is held **out** of the provider
cache (trailing breakpoint relocated before it), stays verbatim while
its file is active, and matures into a CCR-backed marker once the file
is quiet for `quiesce_turns` (default 5; `max_hold_turns` bounds busy
files).
- Only the final compressed form ever enters the cache — **no cached
byte is ever mutated**; matured markers replay byte-identically.
- Wired into the Anthropic handler behind `--read-maturation` /
`HEADROOM_READ_MATURATION=1`; session state rides on the prefix tracker;
advisory (can never fail a request).
- Live-validated against the Anthropic API: held content excluded from
cache_creation; after maturation the prior cached prefix still served —
the no-bust invariant holds end-to-end.
### 5. Rebase / CI fixups (this update)
- Rebased onto latest `main` (was 28 commits behind): picks up `ci: pass
CODECOV_TOKEN to coverage uploads (#968)`, which is what was turning the
4 test shards red — the tests themselves passed (1528) but the post-test
codecov upload exited non-zero on a protected branch.
- Resolved the duplicate `lossless_min_savings_ratio` that two
independent main/branch additions left in `SmartCrusherConfig` and the
Rust-config kwarg (import-time `SyntaxError` + mypy `no-redef`).
- Aligned CCR tests with the new defaults (SQLite backend, 1800s TTL)
across `test_ccr`, `test_adapter_hooks`, `test_compression_store`,
`test_proxy_ccr`, and the lossy row-drop bridge test.

A long-running agent job could receive a `<<ccr:...>>` marker and fail later with a generic not-found/expired response after the fixed 5-minute retention window. The new tests cover this by setting `HEADROOM_CCR_TTL_SECONDS`, creating CCR entries through the same global store used by the proxy, and asserting that stored entries and `/v1/retrieve/stats` use the configured retention. ## Real behavior proof Setup tested: - macOS 15.7.2 - Python 3.13.9 via `uv run --frozen --extra dev --extra proxy` - Local Headroom proxy subprocess: `python -m headroom.proxy.server` - Proxy config: `HEADROOM_TELEMETRY=off`, `HEADROOM_CACHE_ENABLED=false`, `HEADROOM_RATE_LIMIT_ENABLED=false` - Provider/model: no live upstream provider needed; exercised local `/v1/compress` -> `/v1/retrieve` CCR HTTP flow with model `gpt-4o` Exact steps run after the patch: 1. Start a real Headroom proxy process with `HEADROOM_CCR_TTL_SECONDS=7200`. 2. POST a 200-item tool-result payload to `/v1/compress`. 3. Extract the emitted `<<ccr:...>>` marker hash from the compressed messages. 4. GET `/v1/retrieve/stats`. 5. POST `/v1/retrieve` with the marker hash. 6. Repeat with `HEADROOM_CCR_TTL_SECONDS=1`, wait 1.5 seconds, and retrieve the same way to verify explicit expiration reporting. fix: B5 — TOIN observation-only refactor + per-tenant aggregation key
Retire the request-time hint API. PR-B5 splits TOIN into two phases:
1. Observation: TOIN keeps recording compressions/retrievals at runtime,
but `get_recommendation()` is deprecated and now returns None.
2. Publish-then-load: the new `headroom.cli.toin_publish` CLI walks the
on-disk store and emits `recommendations.toml`. The Rust proxy reads
that file once at startup via `transforms::recommendations` and
exposes `get(auth_mode, model, structure_hash) -> Option<&Rec>`.
PR-F3 will wire the loader into the live-zone dispatcher.
Per-tenant aggregation: `_patterns` is now keyed by
`(auth_mode, model_family, sig_hash)` so PAYG/OAuth/subscription tenants
no longer share buckets. Callers that don't supply auth/model land in the
`("unknown", "unknown", sig_hash)` slot. Added `_make_pattern_key` helper
+ updated tests that previously indexed by raw `structure_hash`.
AuthMode is canonical in `transforms::live_zone`; `transforms::recommendations`
re-exports it (no duplicate enum). Live-zone enum gained `Unknown`,
`as_str()`, and `Hash` derive to serve recommendations callers without a
second source of truth.
Why: per-request hint calls coupled output to mutable TOIN state, breaking
prompt-cache stability across runs (P2-27, P5-56). Pulling advice into a
startup-published TOML keeps per-request output deterministic and lets the
deploy pipeline gate publication independently of proxy uptime.

fix(tests): pin proxy_ccr + text_compressors tests to lossy+CCR path
Two more tests broke after PR4's lossless-first default flip — same root cause as the langchain/MCP fixes (#287's first patch): - tests/test_proxy_ccr.py — TestEndToEndTOINIntegration asserts CCR-cache state after compression. Lossless wins on the test fixture and skips CCR entirely (nothing dropped). Pin to lossy via with_compaction=False so the cache assertion holds. - tests/test_text_compressors.py — TestSmartCrusherTextIntegration asserts JSON-array shape round-trip. Lossless substitutes a CSV+schema string. Pin to lossy + JSON shape via with_compaction=False. Lossless coverage exists separately in test_smart_crusher_lossless_default.py. Same pattern, same fix.
