b73d92e2c5 gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: replace many uses of strcmp with streq
Replace all occurrences of:

  strcmp (...) == 0
  strcmp (...) != 0
  !strcmp (...)
  0 == strcmp (...)
  strcmp (...) directly used as a boolean predicate

with the equivalent expression using streq.

This is for consistency (we already use streq as some places in the
testsuite) but also for clarity. I think that streq is clearer on the
intent than strcmp. It's also a bit shorter.

4f148246ca Use make_unique_xstrdup in more places
This replaces a number of uses of 'ptr.reset (xstrdup ())'
with 'ptr = make_unique_xstrdup ()'.

The main motivation for this is that, IMO, it's better to avoid the
reset method when possible.

7028626eff gdb: make command classes be bitmaps
This commit makes it so GDB's command classes can be represented with a
single bit, allowing for a command to have multiple classes. This is
primarily done as preparation for the next patch, but it can provide
value on its own as some commands could be described as belonging to
multiple classes, such as "record" being obscure and related to running
the inferior.

f9e262e1cb gdb: add gdb_rl_tilde_expand util
Add gdb_rl_tilde_expand, a wrapper around readline's tilde_expand that
returns a gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr<char>. Change all callers of
tilde_expand to use gdb_rl_tilde_expand (even the couple of spots that
release it immediatly, for consistency). This simplifies a few callers.

The name gdb_tilde_expand is already taken by a home-made implementation
in gdbsupport/gdb_tilde_expand.{h.cc}. I wonder if we could just use
that one instead of readline's tilde_expand, but that's an orthogonal
question. I don't know how they differ, and I don't want to introduce
behavior changes in this patch.

a5cbe67512 gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: trim trailing whitespaces
I noticed my IDE (VSCode) starting to automatically trim trailing
whitespaces on save, despite the setting for it being disabled. I
realized that this is because the .editorconfig file now has

    trim_trailing_whitespace = true

for many file types. If we have this EditorConfig setting forcing
editors to trim trailing whitespaces, I think it would make sense to
clean up trailing whitespaces from our files. Otherwise, people will
always get spurious whitespace changes when editing these files.

I did a mass cleanup using this command:

$ find gdb gdbserver gdbsupport -type f \( \
    -name "*.c" -o \
    -name "*.h" -o \
    -name "*.cc" -o \
    -name "*.texi" -o \
    -name "*.exp" -o \
    -name "*.tcl" -o \
    -name "*.py" -o \
    -name "*.s" -o \
    -name "*.S" -o \
    -name "*.asm" -o \
    -name "*.awk" -o \
    -name "*.ac" -o \
    -name "Makefile*" -o \
    -name "*.sh" -o \
    -name "*.adb" -o \
    -name "*.ads" -o \
    -name "*.d" -o \
    -name "*.go" -o \
    -name "*.F90" -o \
    -name "*.f90" \
\) -exec sed -ri 's/[ \t]+$//' {} +

I then did an autotools regen, because we don't actually want to change
the Makefile and Makefile.in files that are generated.

3719472095 Use gnulib c-ctype module in gdb
PR ada/33217 points out that gdb incorrectly calls the <ctype.h>
functions. In particular, gdb feels free to pass a 'char' like:

    char *str = ...;
    ... isdigit (*str)

This is incorrect as isdigit only accepts EOF and values that can be
represented as 'unsigned char' -- that is, a cast is needed here to
avoid undefined behavior when 'char' is signed and a character in the
string might be sign-extended. (As an aside, I think this API seems
obviously bad, but unfortunately this is what the standard says, and
some systems check this.)

Rather than adding casts everywhere, this changes all the code in gdb
that uses any <ctype.h> API to instead call the corresponding c-ctype
function.

Now, c-ctype has some limitations compared to <ctype.h>. It works as
if the C locale is in effect, so in theory some non-ASCII characters
may be misclassified. This would only affect a subset of character
sets, though, and in most places I think ASCII is sufficient -- for
example the many places in gdb that check for whitespace.
Furthermore, in practice most users are using UTF-8-based locales,
where these functions aren't really informative for non-ASCII
characters anyway; see the existing workarounds in gdb/c-support.h.

Note that safe-ctype.h cannot be used because it causes conflicts with
readline.h. And, we canot poison the <ctype.h> identifiers as this
provokes errors from some libstdc++ headers.

5fe70629ce Change file initialization to use INIT_GDB_FILE macro
This patch introduces a new macro, INIT_GDB_FILE. This is used to
replace the current "_initialize_" idiom when introducing a per-file
initialization function. That is, rather than write:

    void _initialize_something ();
    void
    _initialize_something ()
    {
       ...
    }

... now you would write:

    INIT_GDB_FILE (something)
    {
       ...
    }

The macro handles both the declaration and definition of the function.

The point of this approach is that it makes it harder to accidentally
cause an initializer to be omitted; see commit 2711e475 ("Ensure
cooked_index_entry self-tests are run"). Specifically, the regexp now
used by make-init-c seems harder to trick.

New in v2: un-did some erroneous changes made by the script.

The bulk of this patch was written by script.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 41.

dc22ab49e9 gdb: deprecated filename_completer and associated functions
Following on from the previous commit, this commit marks the old
unquoted filename completion related functions as deprecated.

The aim of doing this is to make it more obvious to someone adding a
new command that they should not be using the older unquoted style
filename argument handling.

I split this change from the previous to make for an easier review.
This commit touches more files, but is _just_ function renaming.

other files have just been updated to use the new names.

1d506c26d9 Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDB
This commit is the result of the following actions:

  - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to

  - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
    update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
    file,

  - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
    date,

  - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
    these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
    updated them this year to 2024.

I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as

99d9c3b92c gdb: remove target_gdbarch
This function is just a wrapper around the current inferior's gdbarch.
I find that having that wrapper just obscures where the arch is coming
from, and that it's often used as "I don't know which arch to use so
I'll use this magical target_gdbarch function that gets me an arch" when
the arch should in fact come from something in the context (a thread,
objfile, symbol, etc). I think that removing it and inlining
`current_inferior ()->arch ()` everywhere will make it a bit clearer
where that arch comes from and will trigger people into reflecting
whether this is the right place to get the arch or not.

50888e42dc gdb: change functions returning value contents to use gdb::array_view
The bug fixed by this [1] patch was caused by an out-of-bounds access to
a value's content. The code gets the value's content (just a pointer)
and then indexes it with a non-sensical index.

This made me think of changing functions that return value contents to
return array_views instead of a plain pointer. This has the advantage
that when GDB is built with _GLIBCXX_DEBUG, accesses to the array_view
are checked, making bugs more apparent / easier to find.

This patch changes the return types of these functions, and updates
callers to call .data() on the result, meaning it's not changing
anything in practice. Additional work will be needed (which can be done
little by little) to make callers propagate the use of array_view and
reap the benefits.

5538b03c98 gdb: remove cmd_list_element::function::sfunc
I don't understand what the sfunc function type in
cmd_list_element::function is for. Compared to cmd_simple_func_ftype,
it has an extra cmd_list_element parameter, giving the callback access
to the cmd_list_element for the command being invoked. This allows
registering the same callback with many commands, and alter the behavior
using the cmd_list_element's context.

From the comment in cmd_list_element, it sounds like at some point it
was the callback function type for set and show functions, hence the
"s". But nowadays, it's used for many more commands that need to access
the cmd_list_element object (see add_catch_command for example).

I don't really see the point of having sfunc at all, since do_sfunc is
just a trivial shim that changes the order of the arguments. All
commands using sfunc could just as well set cmd_list_element::func to
their callback directly.

Therefore, remove the sfunc field in cmd_list_element and everything
that goes with it. Rename cmd_const_sfunc_ftype to cmd_func_ftype and
use it for cmd_list_element::func, as well as for the add_setshow
commands.

2f822da535 gdb: generate the prefix name for prefix commands on demand
Previously, the prefixname field of struct cmd_list_element was manually
set for prefix commands. This seems verbose and error prone as it
required every single call to functions adding prefix commands to
specify the prefix name while the same information can be easily
generated.

Historically, this was not possible as the prefix field was null for
many commands, but this was fixed in commit
3f4d92ebdf by Philippe Waroquiers, so
we can rely on the prefix field being set when generating the prefix
name.

This commit also fixes a use after free in this scenario:
* A command gets created via Python (using the gdb.Command class).
  The prefix name member is dynamically allocated.
* An alias to the new command is created. The alias's prefixname is set
  to point to the prefixname for the original command with a direct
  assignment.
* A new command with the same name as the Python command is created.
* The object for the original Python command gets freed and its
  prefixname gets freed as well.
* The alias is updated to point to the new command, but its prefixname
  is not updated so it keeps pointing to the freed one.

	* command.h (add_prefix_cmd): Remove the prefixname argument as
	it can now be generated automatically. Update all callers.

	prefixname member variable with a method which generates the
	prefix name at runtime. Update all code reading the prefix
	name to use the method, and remove all code setting it.
	* python/py-cmd.c (cmdpy_destroyer): Remove code to free the

0743fc83c0 Replace most calls to help_list and cmd_show_list
Currently there are many prefix commands that do nothing but call
either help_list or cmd_show_list. I happened to notice that one such
call, for "set print type", used the wrong command list parameter,
causing incorrect output.

Rather than fix this bug in isolation, I decided to eliminate this
possibility by adding two new ways to add prefix commands, which
simply route the call to help_list or cmd_show_list, as appropriate.
This makes it impossible for a mismatch to occur.

In some cases, a bit of output was removed; however, I don't think
this output in general was very useful. It seemed redundant with
what's already printed by help_list. A representative example is this
hunk, removed from ada-lang.c:

-  printf_unfiltered (_(\
-"\"set ada\" must be followed by the name of a setting.\n"));

This simplified the CLI style set/show commands quite a bit, and
allowed the deletion of a macro.

This also cleans up some unusual code in windows-tdep.c.

Tested on x86-64 Fedora 30. Note that I have no way to build the
go32-nat.c change.

6c2659886f gdb: add back declarations for _initialize functions
I'd like to enable the -Wmissing-declarations warning. However, it
warns for every _initialize function, for example:

      CXX    dcache.o
    /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c: In function ‘void _initialize_dcache()’:
    /home/smarchi/src/binutils-gdb/gdb/dcache.c:688:1: error: no previous declaration for ‘void _initialize_dcache()’ [-Werror=missing-declarations]
     _initialize_dcache (void)
     ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The only practical way forward I found is to add back the declarations,
which were removed by this commit:

    commit 481695ed5f
    Author: John Baldwin <jhb@FreeBSD.org>
    Date:   Sat Sep 9 11:02:37 2017 -0700

        Remove unnecessary function prototypes.

I don't think it's a big problem to have the declarations for these
functions, but if anybody has a better solution for this, I'll be happy
to use it.

e0eac551da Remove some includes of readline.h
I went through most of the spots that include readline.h and, when
appropriate, either removed the include or changed it to include
tilde.h.

Note that remote-sim.c and bsd-kvm.c could probably include tilde.h
instead, but I did not change these. I think I can't build the
latter, and I didn't want to set up a sim build for the former.

Tested by rebuilding.

fd3619828e bfd_section_* macros
This large patch removes the unnecessary bfd parameter from various
bfd section macros and functions. The bfd is hardly ever used and if
needed for the bfd_set_section_* or bfd_rename_section functions can
be found via section->owner except for the com, und, abs, and ind
std_section special sections. Those sections shouldn't be modified
anyway.

The patch also removes various bfd_get_section_<field> macros,
replacing their use with bfd_section_<field>, and adds
bfd_set_section_lma. I've also fixed a minor bug in gas where
compressed section renaming was done directly rather than calling
bfd_rename_section. This would have broken bfd_get_section_by_name
and similar functions, but that hardly mattered at such a late stage
in gas processing.

0d12e84cfc Don't include gdbarch.h from defs.h
I touched symtab.h and was surprised to see how many files were
rebuilt. I looked into it a bit, and found that defs.h includes
gdbarch.h, which in turn includes many things.

gdbarch.h is only needed by a minority ofthe files in gdb, so this
patch removes the include from defs.h and updates the fallout.

I did "wc -l" on the files in build/gdb/.deps; this patch reduces the
line count from 139935 to 137030; so there are definitely future
build-time savings here.

Note that while I configured with --enable-targets=all, it's possible
that some *-nat.c file needs an update. I could not test all of
these. The buildbot caught a few problems along these lines.

268a13a5a3 Rename common to gdbsupport
This is the next patch in the ongoing series to move gdbsever to the
top level.

This patch just renames the "common" directory. The idea is to do
this move in two parts: first rename the directory (this patch), then
move the directory to the top. This approach makes the patches a bit
more tractable.

I chose the name "gdbsupport" for the directory. However, as this
patch was largely written by sed, we could pick a new name without too
much difficulty.

Tested by the buildbot.

b02f78f928 Introduce and use make_unique_xstrdup
Adds an utility function to make it shorter to write the common case
of wrapping an xstrdup with a unique_xmalloc_ptr, and uses it
throughout.

Note: I tried to put this in common/common-utils.h near skip_spaces,
etc. but that is included in common/common-defs.h before
common/gdb_unique_ptr.h is included, so it would fail to compile
because gdb::unique_xmalloc_ptr isn't defined at that point yet. I
tried moving the gdb_unique_ptr.h inclusion before common-utils.h, but
that doesn't work because gdb_unique_ptr.h depends on common-utils.h
for xfree.

42a4f53d2b Update copyright year range in all GDB files.
This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py
script.

Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid
copyright header
(gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc).
As the file was copied from GCC's libstdc++-v3 testsuite, this commit
leaves this file untouched for the time being; a patch to fix the header
was sent to gcc-patches first.

	Update copyright year range in all GDB files.

94c18618a8 Fix PR cli/23785: Check if file exists when invoking "restore FILE binary"
This simple patch fixes the segfault reported on PR cli/23785, which
happens when using the "restore FILE binary" command with a
non-existent file. We just have to check if the file handler returned
by "gdb_fopen_cloexec" is not NULL, and error out if it is.

A test has also been added to gdb.base/restore.exp in order to
exercise this scenario.

No regressions introduced.

gdb/ChangeLog:
2018-10-18  Sergio Durigan Junior  <sergiodj@redhat.com>

	PR cli/23785
	* cli/cli-dump.c (restore_binary_file): Check if "file" is
	NULL.

	PR cli/23785
	* gdb.base/restore.exp: New test to check if "restore" with an
	invalid file doesn't segfault.

798a7429f9 Remove some unused variables
This patch removes some unused variables, found with -Wunused. I have
not removed everything reported by -Wunused, because some expressions
such as

  struct type *arg_type = check_typedef (value_type);

in bfin-tdep.c could have an unexpected but important side-effect. I
removed others that I considered more low-risk, such as:

  struct gdbarch *gdbarch = get_objfile_arch (objfile);

I tested building with Python 2/Python 3/no Python, with/without expat,
with/without libipt and with/without babeltrace.

0b39b52e6e Constify add_com
This changes add_com to take a cmd_const_cfunc_ftype, and then fixes
up all the command implementations.

In most cases this is trivial.

In a couple of places I had to again introduce a temporary non-const
overload. These overloads will be removed when add_info is
constified.

981a3fb359 Constify add_prefix_cmd
This changes add_prefix_cmd to accept a const-taking function as an
argument; then fixes up all the callers.

In a couple of spots I had to add a non-const overload of a function,
because the function is passed to two different command-adding
"constructors". These overloads are temporary; once constification is
complete they can be removed.

This patch also fixes a typo I happened to notice while constifying.

Note that this touches a couple of files (gnu-nat.c and go32-nat.c)
that I can't build.  So, while I made a best-effort there, I am not
certain they will still compile.

Tested by rebuilding.
