gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: replace many uses of strcmp with streq
Replace all occurrences of: strcmp (...) == 0 strcmp (...) != 0 !strcmp (...) 0 == strcmp (...) strcmp (...) directly used as a boolean predicate with the equivalent expression using streq. This is for consistency (we already use streq as some places in the testsuite) but also for clarity. I think that streq is clearer on the intent than strcmp. It's also a bit shorter. Use gnulib c-ctype module in gdb
PR ada/33217 points out that gdb incorrectly calls the <ctype.h>
functions. In particular, gdb feels free to pass a 'char' like:
char *str = ...;
... isdigit (*str)
This is incorrect as isdigit only accepts EOF and values that can be
represented as 'unsigned char' -- that is, a cast is needed here to
avoid undefined behavior when 'char' is signed and a character in the
string might be sign-extended. (As an aside, I think this API seems
obviously bad, but unfortunately this is what the standard says, and
some systems check this.)
Rather than adding casts everywhere, this changes all the code in gdb
that uses any <ctype.h> API to instead call the corresponding c-ctype
function.
Now, c-ctype has some limitations compared to <ctype.h>. It works as
if the C locale is in effect, so in theory some non-ASCII characters
may be misclassified. This would only affect a subset of character
sets, though, and in most places I think ASCII is sufficient -- for
example the many places in gdb that check for whitespace.
Furthermore, in practice most users are using UTF-8-based locales,
where these functions aren't really informative for non-ASCII
characters anyway; see the existing workarounds in gdb/c-support.h.
Note that safe-ctype.h cannot be used because it causes conflicts with
readline.h. And, we canot poison the <ctype.h> identifiers as this
provokes errors from some libstdc++ headers.

Change file initialization to use INIT_GDB_FILE macro
This patch introduces a new macro, INIT_GDB_FILE. This is used to
replace the current "_initialize_" idiom when introducing a per-file
initialization function. That is, rather than write:
void _initialize_something ();
void
_initialize_something ()
{
...
}
... now you would write:
INIT_GDB_FILE (something)
{
...
}
The macro handles both the declaration and definition of the function.
The point of this approach is that it makes it harder to accidentally
cause an initializer to be omitted; see commit

Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDB
This commit is the result of the following actions:
- Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

Use unique_xmalloc_ptr<char> when demangling
I noticed that some methods in language_defn could use unique_xmalloc_ptr<char> rather than a plain 'char *'. This patch implements this change, fixing up the fallout and changing gdb_demangle to also return this type. In one spot, std::string is used to simplify some related code, and in another, an auto_obstack is used to avoid manual management. Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 34. |

gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example, there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c). I've always found it awkward when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong indentation, or do I fix it? What if the lines around it are also wrong, do I fix them too? I probably don't want to fix them in the same patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch. So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully). One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last change for these lines. My counter counter argument is: when git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit" anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are interested in, but is not the change you are looking for. So you already need a somewhat efficient way to do this. Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this trivial. For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke. It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it). Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too. My point is that it won't really make archeology more difficult. The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with existing patches. That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve. I have also tried "git rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well. Although that will re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy). gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-linux-tdep.c: Fix This commit applies all changes made after running the gdb/copyright.py script. Note that one file was flagged by the script, due to an invalid copyright header (gdb/unittests/basic_string_view/element_access/char/empty.cc). Support structure offsets that are 512K or larger.
GDB computes structure byte offsets using a 32 bit integer. And, first it computes the offset in bits and then converts to bytes. The result is that any offset that if 512K bytes or larger overflows. This patch changes GDB to use LONGEST for such calculations. Remove CHECK_TYPEDEF, use check_typedef instead
I think that the CHECK_TYPEDEF macro is not necessary, and even a bit
annoying. It makes unclear the fact that the "type" variables gets
overwritten. It has actually bitten me a few times. I think the
following, explicit form, is better.
type = check_typedef (type);
This patches changes all instances of CHECK_TYPEDEF for an equivalent
call to check_typedef. The bulk of the change was done with this sed:
sed -i 's/CHECK_TYPEDEF (\([^)]*\));/\1 = check_typedef (\1);/' <file>.c
The ChangeLog was generated using David Malcom's generate_changelog.py.
I manually fixed those places where it gets the wrong function name,
hopefully all of them.
The patch was built-tested, and I ran a few smoke tests.

New common function "startswith"
This commit introduces a new inline common function "startswith" which takes two string arguments and returns nonzero if the first string starts with the second. It also updates the 295 places where this logic was written out longhand to use the new function. gdb/ChangeLog: * common/common-utils.h (startswith): New inline function. All places where this logic was used updated to use the above. |

Remove spurious exceptions.h inclusions
