6972c12631 gdb: add shadowed field in '-stack-list-locals/variables' mi commands
For C/C++/Fortran languages GDB prints same name variable multiple times in
case of variable shadowing and it is confusing for user to identify which
variable belongs to the current scope.  So GDB now prints location information
for shadowed variables and add 'shadowed' field also in '-stack-list-locals'
and '-stack-list-variables' mi commands for super-block shadowed variable.

Suppose we have test.c file

The "-stack-list-locals" and "-stack-list-variables" mi commands at the
"break here" line gives the following output:

6c98b8bce9 [gdb] Drop nullptr in "get_selected_frame (nullptr)"
I came across "get_selected_frame (nullptr)", and realized nullptr is the
default argument, so this can be simplified to "get_selected_frame ()".

Do so using the following script:
...
$ find gdb* -type f -name "*.[ch]" -o -name "*.cc" \
    | xargs sed -i 's/get_selected_frame (nullptr)/get_selected_frame ()/'
...
and likewise for "get_selected_frame (NULL)".

c76bd1b0f7 Remove symbol lookup of arguments
gdb has some code that looks up argument variables a second time.  So
for instance in mi-cmd-stack.c:

	      if (sym->is_argument ())
		sym2 = (lookup_symbol_search_name
			(sym->search_name (),
			 block, SEARCH_VAR_DOMAIN).symbol);
	      else
		sym2 = sym;

I believe this is a leftover artifact of stabs.  I'm not really
certain (I never really learned stabs) but I think in stabs a function
argument had two symbols: one for the parameter and a second one that
described the location of the argument after the prologue.

DWARF doesn't do this, and there's no need to keep this code around
any more.

This patch removes these vestiges.  In the Ada code, removing the
special argument handling also left the "found_sym" code unused,
leading to more deletions.

For block_lookup_symbol, while the comment there explains that the
"best symbol" hack isn't needed in this situation, it seemed to me
that (1) it might in fact be (because I think a function block could
very well have locals and types as well), and (2) making this function
simpler and removing the argument hack is the better approach anyway.

Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 43.

a5cbe67512 gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: trim trailing whitespaces
I noticed my IDE (VSCode) starting to automatically trim trailing
whitespaces on save, despite the setting for it being disabled.  I
realized that this is because the .editorconfig file now has

    trim_trailing_whitespace = true

for many file types.  If we have this EditorConfig setting forcing
editors to trim trailing whitespaces, I think it would make sense to
clean up trailing whitespaces from our files.  Otherwise, people will
always get spurious whitespace changes when editing these files.

I did a mass cleanup using this command:

3719472095 Use gnulib c-ctype module in gdb
PR ada/33217 points out that gdb incorrectly calls the <ctype.h>
functions.  In particular, gdb feels free to pass a 'char' like:

    char *str = ...;
    ... isdigit (*str)

This is incorrect as isdigit only accepts EOF and values that can be
represented as 'unsigned char' -- that is, a cast is needed here to
avoid undefined behavior when 'char' is signed and a character in the
string might be sign-extended.  (As an aside, I think this API seems
obviously bad, but unfortunately this is what the standard says, and
some systems check this.)

Rather than adding casts everywhere, this changes all the code in gdb
that uses any <ctype.h> API to instead call the corresponding c-ctype
function.

Now, c-ctype has some limitations compared to <ctype.h>.  It works as
if the C locale is in effect, so in theory some non-ASCII characters
may be misclassified.  This would only affect a subset of character
sets, though, and in most places I think ASCII is sufficient -- for
example the many places in gdb that check for whitespace.
Furthermore, in practice most users are using UTF-8-based locales,
where these functions aren't really informative for non-ASCII
characters anyway; see the existing workarounds in gdb/c-support.h.

Note that safe-ctype.h cannot be used because it causes conflicts with
readline.h.  And, we canot poison the <ctype.h> identifiers as this
provokes errors from some libstdc++ headers.

15e11aac9c Use c-ctype.h (not safe-ctype.h) in gdb
This changes gdb and related programs to use the gnulib c-ctype code
rather than safe-ctype.h.  The gdb-safe-ctype.h header is removed.

This changes common-defs.h to include the c-ctype header, making it
available everywhere in gdb.

4260abb7a7 gdb: rename address_class -> location_class
The enum address_class and related fields and methods seem misnamed to
me.  Generalize it to "location_class".  The enumerators in
address_class are already prefixed with LOC, so the new name seems
logical to me.  Rename related fields and methods as well.

Plus, address_class could easily be mistaken for other unrelated things
named "address class" in GDB or DWARF.

Tested by rebuilding.

e5dc0d5d04 gdb: move a bunch of quit-related things to event-top.{c,h}
Move some declarations related to the "quit" machinery from defs.h to
event-top.h.  Most of the definitions associated to these declarations
are in event-top.c.  The exceptions are `quit()` and `maybe_quit()`,
that are defined in utils.c.  For consistency, move these two
definitions to event-top.c.

Include "event-top.h" in many files that use these things.

18d2988e5d gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: remove includes of early headers
Now that defs.h, server.h and common-defs.h are included via the
`-include` option, it is no longer necessary for source files to include
them.  Remove all the inclusions of these files I could find.  Update
the generation scripts where relevant.

8480a37e14 gdb: pass frames as const frame_info_ptr &
We currently pass frames to function by value, as `frame_info_ptr`.
This is somewhat expensive:

 - the size of `frame_info_ptr` is 64 bytes, which is a bit big to pass
   by value
 - the constructors and destructor link/unlink the object in the global
   `frame_info_ptr::frame_list` list.  This is an `intrusive_list`, so
   it's not so bad: it's just assigning a few points, there's no memory
   allocation as if it was `std::list`, but still it's useless to do
   that over and over.

As suggested by Tom Tromey, change many function signatures to accept
`const frame_info_ptr &` instead of `frame_info_ptr`.

Some functions reassign their `frame_info_ptr` parameter, like:

  void
  the_func (frame_info_ptr frame)
  {
    for (; frame != nullptr; frame = get_prev_frame (frame))
      {
        ...
      }
  }

I wondered what to do about them, do I leave them as-is or change them
(and need to introduce a separate local variable that can be
re-assigned).  I opted for the later for consistency.  It might not be
clear why some functions take `const frame_info_ptr &` while others take
`frame_info_ptr`.  Also, if a function took a `frame_info_ptr` because
it did re-assign its parameter, I doubt that we would think to change it
to `const frame_info_ptr &` should the implementation change such that
it doesn't need to take `frame_info_ptr` anymore.  It seems better to
have a simple rule and apply it everywhere.

Currently, if frame-filters are active, raw-values is used instead of
raw-frame-arguments to decide if a pretty-printer should be invoked for
frame arguments in a backtrace.

In this example, "super struct" is the output of the pretty-printer:

So this adds the PRINT_RAW_FRAME_ARGUMENTS flag to frame_filter_flag, which
is then used in the frame-filter to override the raw flag in enumerate_args.

Then the output is the same if a frame-filter is active, the pretty-printer
for backtraces is only disabled with the raw-frame-arguments option:

ccf41c2487 Use domain_search_flags in lookup_symbol et al
This changes lookup_symbol and associated APIs to accept
domain_search_flags rather than a domain_enum.

Note that this introduces some new constants to Python and Guile.  I
chose to break out the documentation patch for this, because the
internals here do not change until a later patch, and it seemed
simpler to patch the docs just once, rather than twice.

1d506c26d9 Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDB
This commit is the result of the following actions:

  - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
    include 2024,

  - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
    update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
    file,

  - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
    date,

  - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023.  If
    these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
    updated them this year to 2024.

I'm sure I've probably missed some dates.  Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

d182e39881 Use C++17 [[fallthrough]] attribute
This changes gdb to use the C++17 [[fallthrough]] attribute rather
than special comments.

This was mostly done by script, but I neglected a few spellings and so
also fixed it up by hand.

I suspect this fixes the bug mentioned below, by switching to a
standard approach that, presumably, clang supports.

6b09f1342c gdb: Replace gdb::optional with std::optional
Since GDB now requires C++17, we don't need the internally maintained
gdb::optional implementation.  This patch does the following replacing:
  - gdb::optional -> std::optional
  - gdb::in_place -> std::in_place
  - #include "gdbsupport/gdb_optional.h" -> #include <optional>

This change has mostly been done automatically.  One exception is
gdbsupport/thread-pool.* which did not use the gdb:: prefix as it
already lives in the gdb namespace.

51f8dafba8 Don't treat references to compound values as "simple".
SUMMARY

The '--simple-values' argument to '-stack-list-arguments' and similar
GDB/MI commands does not take reference types into account, so that
references to arbitrarily large structures are considered "simple" and
printed. This means that the '--simple-values' argument cannot be used
by IDEs when tracing the stack due to the time taken to print large
structures passed by reference.

DETAILS

Various GDB/MI commands ('-stack-list-arguments', '-stack-list-locals',
'-stack-list-variables' and so on) take a PRINT-VALUES argument which
may be '--no-values' (0), '--all-values' (1) or '--simple-values' (2).
In the '--simple-values' case, the command is supposed to print the
name, type, and value of variables with simple types, and print only the
name and type of variables with compound types.

The '--simple-values' argument ought to be suitable for IDEs that need
to update their user interface with the program's call stack every time
the program stops. However, it does not take C++ reference types into
account, and this makes the argument unsuitable for this purpose.

For example, consider the following C++ program:

    struct s {
        int v[10];
    };

    int
    sum(const struct s &s)
    {
        int total = 0;
        for (int i = 0; i < 10; ++i) total += s.v[i];
        return total;
    }

    int
    main(void)
    {
        struct s s = { { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 } };
        return sum(s);
    }

If we start GDB in MI mode and continue to 'sum', the behaviour of
'-stack-list-arguments' is as follows:

    (gdb)
    -stack-list-arguments --simple-values

Note that the value of the argument 's' was printed, even though 's' is
a reference to a structure, which is not a simple value.

See https://github.com/microsoft/MIEngine/pull/673 for a case where this
behaviour caused Microsoft to avoid the use of '--simple-values' in
their MIEngine debug adapter, because it caused Visual Studio Code to
take too long to refresh the call stack in the user interface.

SOLUTIONS

There are two ways we could fix this problem, depending on whether we
consider the current behaviour to be a bug.

1. If the current behaviour is a bug, then we can update the behaviour
   of '--simple-values' so that it takes reference types into account:
   that is, a value is simple if it is neither an array, struct, or
   union, nor a reference to an array, struct or union.

   In this case we must add a feature to the '-list-features' command so
   that IDEs can detect that it is safe to use the '--simple-values'
   argument when refreshing the call stack.

2. If the current behaviour is not a bug, then we can add a new option
   for the PRINT-VALUES argument, for example, '--scalar-values' (3),
   that would be suitable for use by IDEs.

   In this case we must add a feature to the '-list-features' command
   so that IDEs can detect that the '--scalar-values' argument is
   available for use when refreshing the call stack.

PATCH

This patch implements solution (1) as I think the current behaviour of
not printing structures, but printing references to structures, is
contrary to reasonable expectation.

e0f4b3ec5f gdb: Fix building with latest libc++
Latest libc++[1] causes transitive include to <locale> when
<mutex> or <thread> header is included. This causes
gdb to not build[2] since <locale> defines isupper/islower etc.
functions that are explicitly macroed-out in safe-ctype.h to
prevent their use.
Use the suggestion from libc++ to include <locale> internally when
building in C++ mode to avoid build errors.
Use safe-gdb-ctype.h as the include instead of "safe-ctype.h"
to keep this isolated to gdb since rest of binutils
does not seem to use much C++.

d00664dbba Turn many optimized-out value functions into methods

6121eeb729 Clean up unusual code in mi-cmd-stack.c
I noticed some unusual code in mi-cmd-stack.c.  This code is a switch,
where one of the cases appears in the middle of another block.  It
seemed cleaner to me to have the earlier case just conditionally fall
through.

908de5e671 gdb: make frame_info_ptr auto-reinflatable
This is the second step of making frame_info_ptr automatic, reinflate on
demand whenever trying to obtain the wrapper frame_info pointer, either
through the get method or operator->.  Make the reinflate method
private, it is used as a convenience method in those two.

Add an "is_null" method, because it is often needed to know whether the
frame_info_ptr wraps an frame_info or is empty.

Make m_ptr mutable, so that it's possible to reinflate const
frame_info_ptr objects.  Whether m_ptr is nullptr or not does not change
the logical state of the object, because we re-create it on demand.  I
believe this is the right use case for mutable.

f34652de0b internal_error: remove need to pass __FILE__/__LINE__
Currently, every internal_error call must be passed __FILE__/__LINE__
explicitly, like:

  internal_error (__FILE__, __LINE__, "foo %d", var);

The need to pass in explicit __FILE__/__LINE__ is there probably
because the function predates widespread and portable variadic macros
availability.  We can use variadic macros nowadays, and in fact, we
already use them in several places, including the related
gdb_assert_not_reached.

So this patch renames the internal_error function to something else,
and then reimplements internal_error as a variadic macro that expands
__FILE__/__LINE__ itself.

The result is that we now should call internal_error like so:

  internal_error ("foo %d", var);

Likewise for internal_warning.

The patch adjusts all calls sites.  99% of the adjustments were done
with a perl/sed script.

The non-mechanical changes are in gdbsupport/errors.h,
gdbsupport/gdb_assert.h, and gdb/gdbarch.py.

c29a6445a9 gdb/frame: Add reinflation method for frame_info_ptr
Currently, despite having a smart pointer for frame_infos, GDB may
attempt to use an invalidated frame_info_ptr, which would cause internal
errors to happen.  One such example has been documented as PR
python/28856, that happened when printing frame arguments calls an
inferior function.

To avoid failures, the smart wrapper was changed to also cache the frame
id, so the pointer can be reinflated later.  For this to work, the
frame-id stuff had to be moved to their own .h file, which is included
by frame-info.h.

Frame_id caching is done explicitly using the prepare_reinflate method.
Caching is done manually so that only the pointers that need to be saved
will be, and reinflating has to be done manually using the reinflate
method because the get method and the -> operator must not change
the internals of the class.  Finally, attempting to reinflate when the
pointer is being invalidated causes the following assertion errors:

check_ptrace_stopped_lwp_gone: assertion `lp->stopped` failed.
get_frame_pc: Assertion `frame->next != NULL` failed.

As for performance concerns, my personal testing with `time make
chec-perf GDB_PERFTEST_MODE=run` showed an actual reduction of around
10% of time running.

This commit also adds a testcase that exercises the python/28856 bug with
7 different triggers, run, continue, step, backtrace, finish, up and down.
Some of them can seem to be testing the same thing twice, but since this
test relies on stale pointers, there is always a chance that GDB got lucky
when testing, so better to test extra.

Regression tested on x86_64, using both gcc and clang.

bd2b40ac12 Change GDB to use frame_info_ptr
This changes GDB to use frame_info_ptr instead of frame_info *
The substitution was done with multiple sequential `sed` commands:

sed 's/^struct frame_info;/class frame_info_ptr;/'
sed 's/struct frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g' - which left some
    issues in a few files, that were manually fixed.
sed 's/\<frame_info \*/frame_info_ptr /g'
sed 's/frame_info_ptr $/frame_info_ptr/g' - used to remove whitespace
    problems.

The changed files were then manually checked and some 'sed' changes
undone, some constructors and some gets were added, according to what
made sense, and what Tromey originally did

GDB notifies users about user selected thread changes somewhat
inconsistently as mentioned on gdb-patches mailing list here:

Consider GDB debugging a multi-threaded inferior with both CLI and GDB/MI
interfaces connected to separate terminals.

Assuming inferior is stopped and thread 1 is selected, when a thread
2 is selected using '-thread-select 2' command on GDB/MI terminal:

The problem is that when `-thread-select --thread 1 1` is executed
then thread is switched to thread 1 before mi_cmd_thread_select () is
called, therefore the condition "inferior_ptid != previous_ptid"
there does not hold.

To address this problem, we have to move notification logic up to
mi_cmd_execute () where --thread option is processed and notify
user selected contents observers there if context changes.

However, this in itself breaks GDB/MI because it would cause context
notification to be sent on MI channel. This is because by the time
we notify, MI notification suppression is already restored (done in
mi_command::invoke(). Therefore we had to lift notification suppression
logic also up to mi_cmd_execute (). This change in made distinction
between mi_command::invoke() and mi_command::do_invoke() unnecessary
as all mi_command::invoke() did (after the change) was to call
do_invoke(). So this patches removes do_invoke() and moves the command
execution logic directly to invoke().

With this change, all gdb.mi tests pass, tested on x86_64-linux.

This caused problems for frontends that provide access to CLI because UI
may silently change the context for CLI commands (as demonstrated above).

This commit fixes the problem by restoring thread and frame in
mi_cmd_execute (). With this change, there are only two GDB/MI commands
that can change user selected context: -thread-select and -stack-select-frame.
This allows us to remove all and rather complicated logic of notifying
about user selected context change from mi_execute_command (), leaving it
to these two commands themselves to notify.

dda83cd783 gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: fix leading space vs tabs issues
Many spots incorrectly use only spaces for indentation (for example,
there are a lot of spots in ada-lang.c).  I've always found it awkward
when I needed to edit one of these spots: do I keep the original wrong
indentation, or do I fix it?  What if the lines around it are also
wrong, do I fix them too?  I probably don't want to fix them in the same
patch, to avoid adding noise to my patch.

So I propose to fix as much as possible once and for all (hopefully).

One typical counter argument for this is that it makes code archeology
more difficult, because git-blame will show this commit as the last
change for these lines.  My counter counter argument is: when
git-blaming, you often need to do "blame the file at the parent commit"
anyway, to go past some other refactor that touched the line you are
interested in, but is not the change you are looking for.  So you
already need a somewhat efficient way to do this.

Using some interactive tool, rather than plain git-blame, makes this
trivial.  For example, I use "tig blame <file>", where going back past
the commit that changed the currently selected line is one keystroke.
It looks like Magit in Emacs does it too (though I've never used it).
Web viewers of Github and Gitlab do it too.  My point is that it won't
really make archeology more difficult.

The other typical counter argument is that it will cause conflicts with
existing patches.  That's true... but it's a one time cost, and those
are not conflicts that are difficult to resolve.  I have also tried "git
rebase --ignore-whitespace", it seems to work well.  Although that will
re-introduce the faulty indentation, so one needs to take care of fixing
the indentation in the patch after that (which is easy).

32fa152e3b Fix crash in -stack-list-arguments
-stack-list-arguments will crash when stopped in an Ada procedure that
has an argument with a certain name ("_objectO" -- which can only be
generated by the compiler).  The bug occurs because lookup_symbol will
fail in this case.

This patch changes -stack-list-arguments to mirror what is done with
arguments elsewhere.  (As an aside, I don't understand why this lookup
is even needed, but I assume it is some stabs thing?)

In the longer term I think it would be good to share this code between
MI and the CLI.  However, due to the upcoming release, I preferred a
more local fix.

7813437494 gdb: remove TYPE_CODE macro
Remove TYPE_CODE, changing all the call sites to use type::code
directly.  This is quite a big diff, but this was mostly done using sed
and coccinelle.  A few call sites were done by hand.

c1b5c1ebc9 Use an accessor function for general_symbol_info::language
Also renames the member variable to m_language to make code easier to read
when more functions become member functions.

I was originally hoping to eventually make m_language private (after a few
more patches), but unfortunately then it no longer counts as a POD type,
which means gdbsupport/poison.h won't let us use memset to initialize
this type, which psymtabs rely on to clear padding bytes so that bcache
can work properly.
