2ce366ef2a [gdb/exp] Fix ns var lookup when stopped at inlined fn call
Consider test.c:
...
     1	namespace mod_a {
     2	  int xxx = 10;
     3	}
     4
     5	static inline int __attribute__((always_inline))
     6	inlined () {
     7	  return 0;
     8	}
     9
    10	int main () {
    11	  using namespace mod_a;
    12	  int res = inlined ();
    13	  return res + xxx;
    14	}
...
compiled with "g++ test.c -g".

Trying to print variable xxx at line 12 fails:
...
$ gdb -q -batch a.out -ex start -ex "p xxx"
  ...
Temporary breakpoint 1, main () at test.c:12
12	  int res = inlined ();
No symbol "xxx" in current context.
...

The problem is here in function using_direct::valid_line:
...
      CORE_ADDR curr_pc = get_frame_pc (get_selected_frame (nullptr));
      symtab_and_line curr_sal = find_sal_for_pc (curr_pc, 0);
      return (decl_line <= curr_sal.line)
	     || (decl_line >= boundary);
...
where we're trying to decide whether "using namespace mod_a" is applicable.

The decl_line is 11, as expected.

If curr_sal.line were 12, decl_line <= curr_sal.line would be true, and
using_direct::valid_line would return true.

But instead, curr_sal.line is 7.

This is sort of correct, the current PC maps to that line. It's just that gdb
steps into inlined functions in two steps, each with identical PC:
- once stopping at the call site (line 12 in this case)
- once stopping at the PC line (line 7 in this case)

The function using_direct::valid_line doesn't apply this logic, and
consequently line 7 is used for both cases.

Fix this by using find_frame_sal instead.

Tested on x86_64-linux.

c20c23f2a7 [gdb/exp] Limit workaround in using_direct::valid_line to broken GCC versions
Consider test.c:
...
     1	namespace mod_a {
     2	  int xxx = 10;
     3	}
     4
     5	static void
     6	foo ()
     7	{
     8	}
     9
    10	int
    11	main ()
    12	{
    13	  {
    14	    foo ();
    15	    using namespace mod_a;
    16	  }
    17
    18	  return mod_a::xxx;
    19	}
...
compiled with "g++ test.c -g".

Attempting to print xxx at line 14 shouldn't find anything (because it's
before the "using namespace mod_a"), but it does:
...
$ gdb -q -batch a.out -ex start -ex "p xxx"
...
Temporary breakpoint 1, main () at test.c:14
14	    foo ();
$1 = 10
...

This happens because using_direct::valid_line returns true here:
...
      return (decl_line <= curr_sal.line)
	     || (decl_line >= boundary);
...

Since we have decl_line == 15 and curr_sal.line == 14,
"(decl_line <= curr_sal.line)" evaluates to false.

But boundary == 14, so "(decl_line >= boundary)" evaluates to true.

The "(decl_line >= boundary)" bit was added as a workaround for
GCC PR debug/108716.

Since I'm using GCC 15, the workaround is not needed.

Fix this by limiting the workaround to broken GCC versions.

Tested on x86_64-linux, using GCC 15.2, and 7.5.

6c98b8bce9 [gdb] Drop nullptr in "get_selected_frame (nullptr)"
I came across "get_selected_frame (nullptr)", and realized nullptr is the
default argument, so this can be simplified to "get_selected_frame ()".

Do so using the following script:
...
$ find gdb* -type f -name "*.[ch]" -o -name "*.cc" \
    | xargs sed -i 's/get_selected_frame (nullptr)/get_selected_frame ()/'
...
and likewise for "get_selected_frame (NULL)".

Tested on x86_64-linux.

b73d92e2c5 gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: replace many uses of strcmp with streq
Replace all occurrences of:

  strcmp (...) == 0
  strcmp (...) != 0
  !strcmp (...)
  0 == strcmp (...)
  strcmp (...) directly used as a boolean predicate

with the equivalent expression using streq.

This is for consistency (we already use streq as some places in the
testsuite) but also for clarity. I think that streq is clearer on the
intent than strcmp. It's also a bit shorter.

12406b2cda Remove 'copy_names' parameter from add_using_directive
I noticed that add_using_directive's 'copy_names' parameter is only
used by a single caller. This patch removes the parameter and changes
that caller to copy the names itself. I chose to use intern here
since I suspect the names may well be repeated in a given objfile.

18d2988e5d gdb, gdbserver, gdbsupport: remove includes of early headers
Now that defs.h, server.h and common-defs.h are included via the
`-include` option, it is no longer necessary for source files to include
them. Remove all the inclusions of these files I could find. Update
the generation scripts where relevant.

1d506c26d9 Update copyright year range in header of all files managed by GDB
This commit is the result of the following actions:

  - Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
    include 2024,

  - Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
    update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
    file,

  - Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
    date,

  - Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
    these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
    updated them this year to 2024.

I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.

83b6e1f1c5 gdb: remove language.h include from frame.h
This helps resolve some cyclic include problem later in the series.
The only language-related thing frame.h needs is enum language, and that
is in defs.h.

Doing so reveals that a bunch of files were relying on frame.h to
include language.h, so fix the fallouts here and there.

68ce1575fc gdb/c++: validate 'using' directives based on the current line
When asking GDB to print a variable from an imported namespace, we only
want to see variables imported in lines that the inferior has already
gone through, as is being tested last in gdb.cp/nsusing.exp. However
with the proposed change to gdb.cp/nsusing.exp, we get the following
failures:

(gdb) PASS: gdb.cp/nsusing.exp: continue to breakpoint: marker10 stop
print x
$9 = 911
(gdb) FAIL: gdb.cp/nsusing.exp: print x, before using statement
next
15        y += x;
(gdb) PASS: gdb.cp/nsusing.exp: using namespace M
print x
$10 = 911
(gdb) PASS: gdb.cp/nsusing.exp: print x, only using M

Showing that the feature wasn't functioning properly, it just so
happened that gcc ordered the namespaces in a convenient way.
This happens because GDB doesn't take into account the line where the
"using namespace" directive is written. So long as it shows up in the
current scope, we assume it is valid.

To fix this, add a new member to struct using_direct, that stores the
line where the directive was written, and a new function that informs if
the using directive is valid already.

Unfortunately, due to a GCC bug, the failure still shows up. Compilers
that set the declaration line of the using directive correctly (such as
Clang) do not show such a bug, so the test includes an XFAIL for gcc
code.

Finally, because the final test of gdb.cp/nsusing.exp has turned into
multiple that all would need XFAILs for older GCCs (<= 4.3), and that
GCC is very old, if it is detected, the test just exits early.

224c3ddb89 Add casts to memory allocation related calls
Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the
allocated memory. In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when
assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case
more often than not).

The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit
"(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++". I
validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to
make it respect the coding style. I also found multiple places where I
could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc.

Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing
it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time.

Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified. This
means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be
dealt with later by using appropiate compilers. Or maybe we can try to
build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't
know.

I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.

Here's the changelog entry, which was not too bad to make despite the
size, thanks to David Malcom's script. I fixed some bits by hand, but
there might be some wrong parts left (hopefully not).

Pierre-Marie de Rodat
22cee43f9a [Ada] Add support for subprogram renamings
Consider the following declaration:

    function Foo (I : Integer) return Integer renames Pack.Bar;

As Foo is not materialized as a routine whose name is derived from Foo,
GDB currently cannot use it:

    (gdb) print foo(0)
    No definition of "foo" in current context.

However, compilers can emit DW_TAG_imported_declaration in order to
materialize the fact that Foo is actually another name for Pack.Bar.
This commit enhances the DWARF reader to record global renamings (it
used to put global ones in a static block) and enhances the Ada engine
to leverage this information during symbol lookup.

gdb/ChangeLog:

	* ada-lang.c: Include namespace.h
	(aux_add_nonlocal_symbols): Fix a function name in comment.
	(ada_add_block_renamings): New.
