For C/C++/Fortran/Ada languages GDB prints same name variable multiple
times in case of variable shadowing and it is confusing for user to identify
which variable belongs to the current scope. So for such cases add location
info to the innermost listed variables and for super block variables add
"shadowed" annotation in the form of "<file.c:line, shadowed>".
Suppose we have

After applying this patch, we obtain:

The patch adds the location annotations by keeping track of inner block
and already printed variables to identify shadowing. So, GDB now prints
"<file.c:line, shadowed>" for shadowed super-block variables and
"<file.c:line>" for innermost declarations of such variables only.
The location annotations are printed for shadowed variables in case of
C/C++/Fortran/Ada languages. In Rust, it is possible to declare a
variable with the same name many times. So in this case, just the first
instance of the variable is printed. RUST language test "var_reuse.exp"
fails with rustc compiler version >= 1.73 so XFAIL is added accordingly.
Fix regex expression in the gdb.opt/inline-locals.exp test according to
this change. The test update is only required due to the existing gdb
known ticket gdb/25695 where this issue is seen with 7.5.0 version on
sles15sp6 but it is not seen anymore on the newer gcc versions e.g.
gcc-11.4.0.
The symtab()/filename() nullptr check was added specifically to avoid
the crash seen in gdb.dwarf2/missing-type-name-for-templates.exp where
template symbols may have no associated source file.

I came across "get_selected_frame (nullptr)", and realized nullptr is the
default argument, so this can be simplified to "get_selected_frame ()".
Do so using the following script:

gdb has some code that looks up argument variables a second time. So
for instance in mi-cmd-stack.c:

I believe this is a leftover artifact of stabs. I'm not really
certain (I never really learned stabs) but I think in stabs a function
argument had two symbols: one for the parameter and a second one that
described the location of the argument after the prologue.
DWARF doesn't do this, and there's no need to keep this code around
any more.
This patch removes these vestiges. In the Ada code, removing the
special argument handling also left the "found_sym" code unused,
leading to more deletions.
For block_lookup_symbol, while the comment there explains that the
"best symbol" hack isn't needed in this situation, it seemed to me
that (1) it might in fact be (because I think a function block could
very well have locals and types as well), and (2) making this function
simpler and removing the argument hack is the better approach anyway.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 43.

This is for consistency (we already use streq as some places in the

The buffered stream code is currently in ui-out.h and ui-out.c, which
seems weird because it seems more like a low-level ui-file idea (for
the most part, it does also affect some ui_out).
This patch moves the declarations to a new header file,
buffered-streams.h and the implementation to buffered-streams.c. This
seems cleaner to me.

Notice that 'info frame' claims that the current frame is 'dummy_func'
rather than 'caller', as the 'backtrace', 'up', and 'frame' commands
claim.
This is because 'backtrace', 'up', and 'frame' all uses print_frame to
print the frame details, which in turn uses find_frame_funname to get
the frame's function name.
In contrast, 'info_frame_command_core' contains an inlined copy of
'find_frame_funname' with one key difference. The code in
info_frame_command_core uses get_frame_pc_if_available while
find_frame_funname uses get_frame_address_in_block_if_available. The
latter function returns '$pc - 1' if the frame in question could be a
tail call function, while get_frame_pc_if_available always returns
$pc. This difference means that, for a tail call function, GDB will
lookup the wrong msymbol.
Fix this by updating info_frame_command_core to use
find_frame_funname. We end up still keeping the call to
get_frame_pc_if_available as 'info frame' still needs to print this
address. There should be no other noticeable changes after this
commit.
There's also a test in which I have tried to create a tail call
function in a (relatively) target agnostic way. I compile a test
program, pull some addresses from it, then recompile the test to
assembly, and augment the assembler output, changing one symbol size,
and adding an entirely new function symbol. The modified assembly
file is then compiled, without debug information, to create the actual
test executable. This gives GDB the impression that the test contains
a tail call function.

with 'ptr = make_unique_xstrdup ()'.
The main motivation for this is that, IMO, it's better to avoid the

I noticed that the output of 'info frame' was not styled much; the
frame's filename is styled, as are the names of any frame local
variables. But there's lots of address and line number styling
missing.
When I started looking at the info_frame_command_core function though,
there were lots of coding standard changes that could be made too, so
while I was in the area I thought I'd make some coding standard
changes to the function:
+ Inlined local variable declarations.
+ Removed the 'caller_pc_p' local, and made 'caller_pc' a
std::optional<CORE_ADDR> instead.
+ Converted a local from 'int' to 'bool'.
+ Replaced NULL with nullptr.
+ Replaced calls to gdb_printf with gdb_puts when the thing to print
is a constant string.
+ Added { ... } around if/else bodies that are a single statement
AND a comment inline with GDB coding style.
+ Avoid treating pointers and integers as booleans in 'if'
conditions. Compare to nullptr and/or zero instead.
Other than the new styling, there should be no user visible changes
after this commit.

This updates the copyright headers to include 2026. I did this by
running gdb/copyright.py and then manually modifying a few files as
noted by the script.
Currently, there is no way for a new user to have an idea of common
useful commands and behaviors from the GDB interface itself, without
checking the example session in the documentation. This command class
aims to close that gap by providing a set of quickstart commands that
allows for any simple debug session to happen without anything too
egregious missing.
The set of commands was chosen somewhat arbitrarily, based on what I
used or missed the most. The one overarching important thing, however,
is that the list is kept short, so as to not overwhelm new users. This
is confirmed by the newly introduced selftest, essential_command_count,
which ensures there are 20 or fewer essential commands.
Here's the reasoning for some of the choices:
* The command "start" was picked over "run" because combining it with
"continue" achieves the same effect, and I prefer it over needing to set
a breakpoint on main to stop at the start of the inferior.
* The command "ptype" is chosen because I believe it is important to
provide a way for the user to check a variable's type from inside GDB,
and ptype is a more complete command than the alternative, "whatis".

I noticed my IDE (VSCode) starting to automatically trim trailing
whitespaces on save, despite the setting for it being disabled. I
realized that this is because the .editorconfig file now has
trim_trailing_whitespace = true
for many file types. If we have this EditorConfig setting forcing
editors to trim trailing whitespaces, I think it would make sense to
clean up trailing whitespaces from our files. Otherwise, people will
always get spurious whitespace changes when editing these files.
I did a mass cleanup using this command:

PR ada/33217 points out that gdb incorrectly calls the <ctype.h>
functions. In particular, gdb feels free to pass a 'char' like:
char *str = ...;
... isdigit (*str)
This is incorrect as isdigit only accepts EOF and values that can be
represented as 'unsigned char' -- that is, a cast is needed here to
avoid undefined behavior when 'char' is signed and a character in the
string might be sign-extended. (As an aside, I think this API seems
obviously bad, but unfortunately this is what the standard says, and
some systems check this.)
Rather than adding casts everywhere, this changes all the code in gdb
that uses any <ctype.h> API to instead call the corresponding c-ctype
function.
Now, c-ctype has some limitations compared to <ctype.h>. It works as
if the C locale is in effect, so in theory some non-ASCII characters
may be misclassified. This would only affect a subset of character
sets, though, and in most places I think ASCII is sufficient -- for
example the many places in gdb that check for whitespace.
Furthermore, in practice most users are using UTF-8-based locales,
where these functions aren't really informative for non-ASCII
characters anyway; see the existing workarounds in gdb/c-support.h.
Note that safe-ctype.h cannot be used because it causes conflicts with
readline.h. And, we canot poison the <ctype.h> identifiers as this
provokes errors from some libstdc++ headers.

The enum address_class and related fields and methods seem misnamed to
me. Generalize it to "location_class". The enumerators in
address_class are already prefixed with LOC, so the new name seems
logical to me. Rename related fields and methods as well.
Plus, address_class could easily be mistaken for other unrelated things
named "address class" in GDB or DWARF.
Tested by rebuilding.

The convenience function get_frame_pc_if_available would take a pointer
to a variable that should be set if available, and would return a
boolean indicating whether that action was successful or not.
Now that GDB supports C++17 features, this indirection of a pointer and
returning boolean is unnecessary, since the function can return an
optional, and code that calls it can check if the optional contains a
value.
This commit makes that modernization. It should have no visible
effects.

This patch introduces a new macro, INIT_GDB_FILE. This is used to
replace the current "_initialize_" idiom when introducing a per-file
initialization function. That is, rather than write:

_initialize_something ()

}
... now you would write:
INIT_GDB_FILE (something)
{
...
}
The macro handles both the declaration and definition of the function.
The point of this approach is that it makes it harder to accidentally
cause an initializer to be omitted; see commit 2711e475 ("Ensure
cooked_index_entry self-tests are run"). Specifically, the regexp now
used by make-init-c seems harder to trick.
New in v2: un-did some erroneous changes made by the script.
The bulk of this patch was written by script.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 41.
This updates the copyright headers to include 2025. I did this by
running gdb/copyright.py and then manually modifying a few files as

The problem is that the 'function' mechanism uses get_frame_pc() and
then compares the address returned with the bounds of the function
we're looking for.
So in this case, the bounds of func_that_tail_calls are 0x40117a to
0x401183, with 0x401183 being the first address _after_ the function.
However, because func_that_tail_calls ends in a tail call, then the
get_frame_pc() is 0x401183, the first address after the function. As
a result, GDB fails to realise that frame #1 is inside the function
we're looking for, and the lookup fails.
The fix is to use get_frame_address_in_block, which will return an
adjusted address, in this case, 0x401182, which is within the function
bounds. Now the lookup works:

After installing package glibc-debuginfo and adding --with-separate-debug-dir
to the configure flags, I managed to reproduce the FAIL.
The regression seems to be a progression in the sense that the function name
for the signal trampoline is found.
After reading up on the signal trampoline [2] and the return command [3], my
understanding is that forced returning from the signal trampoline is
potentially unsafe, given that for instance the process signal mask won't be
restored.
Fix this by:
- rather than using the name, using "signal trampoline" in the query, and
- adding a warning about returning from a signal trampoline,
giving us:

Most files including gdbcmd.h currently rely on it to access things
actually declared in cli/cli-cmds.h (setlist, showlist, etc). To make
things easy, replace all includes of gdbcmd.h with includes of
cli/cli-cmds.h. This might lead to some unused includes of
cli/cli-cmds.h, but it's harmless, and much faster than going through
the 170 or so files by hand.

Move some declarations related to the "quit" machinery from defs.h to
event-top.h. Most of the definitions associated to these declarations
are in event-top.c. The exceptions are `quit()` and `maybe_quit()`,
that are defined in utils.c. For consistency, move these two
definitions to event-top.c.
Include "event-top.h" in many files that use these things.

We currently pass frames to function by value, as `frame_info_ptr`.
This is somewhat expensive:
- the size of `frame_info_ptr` is 64 bytes, which is a bit big to pass
by value
- the constructors and destructor link/unlink the object in the global
`frame_info_ptr::frame_list` list. This is an `intrusive_list`, so
it's not so bad: it's just assigning a few points, there's no memory
allocation as if it was `std::list`, but still it's useless to do
that over and over.
As suggested by Tom Tromey, change many function signatures to accept
`const frame_info_ptr &` instead of `frame_info_ptr`.
Some functions reassign their `frame_info_ptr` parameter, like:

I wondered what to do about them, do I leave them as-is or change them
(and need to introduce a separate local variable that can be
re-assigned). I opted for the later for consistency. It might not be
clear why some functions take `const frame_info_ptr &` while others take
`frame_info_ptr`. Also, if a function took a `frame_info_ptr` because
it did re-assign its parameter, I doubt that we would think to change it
to `const frame_info_ptr &` should the implementation change such that
it doesn't need to take `frame_info_ptr` anymore. It seems better to
have a simple rule and apply it everywhere.

So this adds the PRINT_RAW_FRAME_ARGUMENTS flag to frame_filter_flag, which
is then used in the frame-filter to override the raw flag in enumerate_args.
Then the output is the same if a frame-filter is active, the pretty-printer
for backtraces is only disabled with the raw-frame-arguments option:

This changes lookup_symbol and associated APIs to accept
domain_search_flags rather than a domain_enum.
Note that this introduces some new constants to Python and Guile. I
chose to break out the documentation patch for this, because the
internals here do not change until a later patch, and it seemed
simpler to patch the docs just once, rather than twice.
Remove SYMBOL_BLOCK_OPS, SYMBOL_COMPUTED_OPS and SYMBOL_REGISTER_OPS, in
favor of methods on struct symbol. More changes could be done here to
improve the design and make things safer, but I just wanted to do a
straightforward change to remove the macros for now.

Introduce new ui_file buffering_file to temporarily collect output
written to gdb_std* output streams during print_thread, print_frame_info
and print_stop_event.
This ensures that output during these functions is not interrupted
by debuginfod progress messages.
With the addition of deferred debuginfo downloading it is possible
for download progress messages to print during these events.
Without any intervention we can end up with poorly formatted output:

To fix this we buffer writes to gdb_std* output streams while allowing
debuginfod progress messages to skip the buffers and print to the
underlying output streams immediately. Buffered output is then written
to the output streams. This ensures that progress messages print first,
followed by uninterrupted frame/thread/stop info:

This commit is the result of the following actions:
- Running gdb/copyright.py to update all of the copyright headers to
include 2024,
- Manually updating a few files the copyright.py script told me to
update, these files had copyright headers embedded within the
file,
- Regenerating gdbsupport/Makefile.in to refresh it's copyright
date,
- Using grep to find other files that still mentioned 2023. If
these files were updated last year from 2022 to 2023 then I've
updated them this year to 2024.
I'm sure I've probably missed some dates. Feel free to fix them up as
you spot them.
Remove VALUE_REGNUM, replace it with a method on struct value. Set
`m_location.reg.regnum` directly from value::allocate_register_lazy,
which is fine because allocate_register_lazy is a static creation
function for struct value.

Since GDB now requires C++17, we don't need the internally maintained
gdb::optional implementation. This patch does the following replacing:
- gdb::optional -> std::optional
- gdb::in_place -> std::in_place
- #include "gdbsupport/gdb_optional.h" -> #include <optional>
This change has mostly been done automatically. One exception is
gdbsupport/thread-pool.* which did not use the gdb:: prefix as it
already lives in the gdb namespace.

Remove get_current_regcache, inlining the call to get_thread_regcache in
callers. When possible, pass the right thread_info object known from
the local context. Otherwise, fall back to passing `inferior_thread ()`.
This makes the reference to global context bubble up one level, a small
step towards the long term goal of reducing the number of references to
global context (or rather, moving those references as close as possible
to the top of the call tree).
No behavior change expected.

I stumbled across a few spots that mention that a function
"invalidates frame" and also assignments of NULL to a frame_info_ptr.
This code isn't harmful, but is also unnecessary since the
introduction of frame_info_ptr -- nowadays frame invalidations are
handled automatically.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 38.

The author of 'mold' pointed out that with a certain shared library,
gdb would fail to find the shared library's name in 'bt'.
The function in question appeared at the end of the .so's .text
segment and ended with a call to 'abort'.
This turned out to be a classic case of calling get_frame_pc when
get_frame_address_in_block is needed -- the former will be off-by-one
for purposes of finding the enclosing function or shared library.
The included test fails without the patch on my system. However, I
imagine it can't be assumed to reliably fail. Nevertheless it seemed
worth doing.
Regression tested on x86-64 Fedora 38.
