--{ [S]imulated [M]edieval [A]dventure Multi-[U]ser [G]ame }--
--{SMAUG II}-- is a Merc and DikuMUD derived MUD server. Its name is a backronym inspired by the dragon Smaug found in J. R. R. Tolkien's fiction. --{SMAUG II}-- is a multiplayer text-based role-playing game in a real-time virtual world, which is a type of MUD. Modern massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) traces directly back to the MUD genre.
--{SMAUG II}-- is an enhancenment of SMAUGfuss 1.7, this project was started to have an stable source code structure, which will build, install and run in most modern distributed system environments. --{SMAUG II}-- is ready to add, enable and disable new code snippets using the new GNU Autotools build system. Many bug fixes and additions were made to the SMAUG 1.8b source code, always trying to keep the compatibility with SMAUG previous revisions. All path definitions for data files and directories were modified, because --{SMAUG II}-- installation is now stored into a modern system directory distribution. All code is internationalized using GNU Gettext, all zones, clases, races and some system files were modified to be translated. Old "startd" script was replaced with "smaugd" and "smaugd-monitor", these scripts will start up and keep your MUD server running. If the --{SMAUG II}-- server process fails, "smaugd-monitor" will respawn it again. To know more about all these new changes, take a look at the section --{SMAUG II}-- ChangeLog.
All of the stock areas in --{SMAUG II}-- have been updated to support the new format and as such will not be backward compatible with any SMAUG MUD that does not employ the reset fix. Since there has been some confusion of late about version numbers because of some 1.5 packages out there, SMAUG 1.6 was choosen to clearly differentiate this one. Areas written for SMAUG 1.02a, 1.4, and 1.4a should load without a problem and remain compatible with these versions so long as they are not saved using SMAUG 1.6. Also as a result of these changes, areas saved using the SMAUG 1.6 code will NOT be compatible with various area editors out there, such as Orb or Nick Gammon's Area Editor program. Bump was made again to 1.7 after some extra support features were added for dlsym and MCCP among other things.
SMAUGfuss 1.7, is an fixed SMAUG 1.4a which is a heavily modified derivative of the Merc 2.1 distribution. SMAUG 1.4a is close to six times the size of Merc 2.1, and has major changes to the inner workings of the code, hence making porting of code from other Diku-derivatives non-trivial to the non-coder. Due to the ability to edit most everything online, you will most likely find the online help pages more informative. SMAUG is the base code that runs the popular Realms of Despair MUD. Through the years it has been tweaked, modified, and enhanced to become one of the most feature packed branches of the MERC family of codebases.
SMAUG is a derivative of Merc Diku Mud is a Diku Mud with many enhancements and contributions. It was written in 1990 and 1991 by Sebastian Hammer, Tom Madsen, Katja Nyboe, Michael Seifert, and Hans Henrik StÊrfeldt at DIKU (Datalogisk Institut KÞbenhavns Universitet) at the department of computer science at the University of Copenhagen in Copenhagen, Denmark. Commonly referred to as simply "Diku", the game was greatly inspired by AberMUD, though Diku became one of the first multi-usergames to become popular as a freely-available program for its gameplay and similarity to Dungeons & Dragons.
AberMUD was the first popular open source MUD. It was named after the town Aberystwyth, in which it was written. The first version was written in B by Alan Cox, Richard Acott, Jim Finnis, and Leon Thrane based at University of Wales, Aberystwyth for an old Honeywell mainframe and opened in 1987.
--{SMAUG II}-- Releases
--{SMAUG II}-- version 2.0 is HERE! With many bugfixes as well as important and useful new code and build features.
- [--{SMAUG II}-- Release] (https://github.com/smaugmuds/smaug/releases/tag/2.0) ¡Launch!
Installing and using the code
It should be fairly a straightforward process to install the mud. Using either Cygwin or a *nix flavor, unpack the tgz file (which you probably already have if you're reading this).
Building
sh autogen.sh
./configure --prefix=/your/path
make
make install
Starting Up
sudo /opt/smaug/etc/init.d/smaug start
Log in to the mud, and use the following user/pass:
admin/admin
Once you're in, you can either use the pcrename command to change this character's name to yours ( and then change the password! ) or you can use it to advance another character who logs in afterward. If you choose to advance a different character, delete the admin player for security purposes.
Start having some fun! ;)

Having trouble with --{SMAUG II}--?
First, check out the documentation at [--{SMAUG II}-- Wiki] (https://github.com/smaugmuds/xmerc/wiki) or send an Issue and we'll help you sort it out.
We rewrote all of the documentation files for the --{SMAUG II}-- Release, and have been keeping them up-to-date since.
Also check the 'wizhelp', 'help', 'hlist' commands and read the 'help' descriptions for the individual immortal commands.
When you write us, we need to know what kind of machine you're running on. If you can give us specific information about the problem, that helps too.
Specific information means: an adb or gdb stack trace (if you're reporting a crash), or a syslog with the relevant commands logged. The player files are ascii files dump them into your mail message too.
You can also read the Documentation in the 'doc' directory.
